Entertainment, over the years, has always been one of the biggest attractions in Nigeria. In 2013, it was highly concentrated on by corporate investors and individuals, while a lot of hard work was put in music, film, reality TV shows, awards, musical concerts, shows, and lots more. 2013 was a huge success in all these areas of entertainment just like previous years.
Nigerian celebrities gave their best in all ramifications of entertainment from the beginning of 2013 with popular names rocking on every medium such as Radio, TV and social media. Let’s examine the top Nigerian celebrities and artistic work which were really hot throughout the year.
Starting from the 34-year-old Queen of Nollywood Omotola Jalade- Ekeinde who has topped film charts and become not just the best locally, but acknowledged across the globe. Since 2011, Omotola has attended the Grammys Award ceremony in the US and she was awarded The Black Entertainment Film Fashion Television and Arts, BEFFTA, Icon Award. Omotola is the first Nigerian to ever own a reality television show, “Omotola: The Real Me” which debuted on DSTV this year. She was featured in TIME’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2013 and crowned her year of accolades with a chieftaincy title given by Ondo State, her home state.
In no particular order, 2013 was the year of Wizkid, Iyanya, D’Banj, Ice Prince. Olamide, Davido, Kcee, Tiwa Savage, Banky W and P-Square. Their exploits in the music scene ranged from releases of hit singles and videos to fat cheque endorsements, awards, performances, public appearances and positive media acceptance. Their names couldn’t be found wanting on the lips of Nigerians throughout the year.
Wizkid’s singles such has, Caro, The Matter and Jaiye Jaiye are still rocking clubs, parties, shows and concerts. Wizkid was nominated and awarded severally in 2013, including the prestigious Video of the Year Award at Channel O Music Video Award 2013. Ice Prince also brought glory to the country in 2013 by snagging the coveted MTV Europe Awards trophy for Best African Act.
So far this year, Nigerians witnessed several musical concerts in many big cities. Some of these concerts were record breakers and exceptional like the Colourful World of More, Love Like a Movie, Rhythm Unplugged, Star Quest Music Tour, Lagos Jazz Series and Sister With Soul which brought to Nigeria legendary American R’n’B queen and soul diva, Mary J. Blige. These concerts pulled huge numbers of people with mind blowing performances.
One cannot omit the fact that there were some musical albums released in 2013 that top the charts. From the beginning of the year we had albums such as Brymo – Merchant, Dealers and Slaves; Omawumi – The Lasso of Truth; Jesse Jagz – Thy Nation Come Vol 1; Waje – Word Aren’t Just Enough.
But Olamide’s album Baddest Guy Ever Liveth, released towards the end of the year, still earned the biggest acceptance with first its ‘Gun Man Pose’ pictorial swag that went viral among Nigerians. The highly anticipated album has produced monster hits like “Durosoke” and “Turn Up”. The indigenous rap artiste also counted success at the 2013 Nigeria Entertainment Awards, NEA, which held on Sunday, September 1. Olamide turned out to be the biggest winner of the night, walking away with three awards.
The entertainment scene in 2013 can’t be completely reviewed without giving kudos to the success of many reality TV shows that entertained and reformed many individuals in Nigeria. These include MTN Project Fame, Big Brother Africa, Maltina Dance All, Glo Naija Sings, Glo X Factor and Glo Lafta Fest featuring the best of American and African comedians on a 10-city tour, among others. These shows which millions of Nigerians follow have produced some of the country’s top entertainment stars.
Nigerian comedians have also made 2013 a remarkable year. They hosted, organised and graced shows, concerts, events, parties. Names like Basket Mouth, Gbenga Adeyinka, I Go Dye, Bovi, Seyi Law, Julius Agwu, AY, Tee A and other are commanding six-digit appearance fees and hosting their sellout shows. A well-planned public event is not complete without the presence of any of these comedians.
