The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested a 38-year-old man, Jude Izuchukwu at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, while trying to smuggle drugs concealed in foodstuff out of the country.
Jude who was apprehended on Monday, had 9.375 kilogramme of compressed cannabis concealed in dried fish, dried bitter leaf, crayfish, melon and other local food spices which was detected at the airport when he came to register his luggage before take-off.
The Anambra-born alleged smuggler said he had bought the cannabis for N104, 000 and was attempting to board an Ethiopian flight to China before he ran out of luck.
“I bought the hemp for N104, 000 and I learnt that I could sell it for $9,000 in China. That was the reason I decided to smuggle drugs,” he said.
According to Jude, poverty forced him into drug trafficking as he was doing well in business before they duped him of N5m.
The NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade however countered the suspect’s reason for engaging in the crime describing it as baseless.
He explained that someone who could afford to buy drugs worth N100,000 and also a return ticket was not a pauper. He also expressed joy that the suspect was apprehended in Nigeria and not China where he might have faced the death penalty.
